Following the inconvenience of The Beast from the East. The Ras Dewi Sant of 2018 has been rescheduled for the 7th April 2018.

In addition to the half & Full marathons we are also going to hold a 10K Run.

The half & Full routes are predominately on the Coast Path and pass by some of the most scenic and historical sites in Wales and wider. The Half is a challenge but an achievable one for all. It has a great atmosphere amongst the runners and is a great day out but not to be underestimated. Whilst the Full is a Challenge for anyone and has been described as one of the most beautiful and difficult Marathons in Europe. The course takes you around the UK’s only coastal National Park and should be on any runners bucket list.

The 10K run will be a mixture of road, coast path and of course will include the great, iconic and challenging finish of up the Cathedral hill its steps on the way to the finish line.

The 2018 Ras will see us moving from St Davids Rugby Club to The Cross Hotel, which is ideally situated in the centre of St Davids. This move excites us as the event will be starting and finishing in the heart of the UK’s smallest City in the comfort of this splendid hotel.

Ras Dewi Sant (Coast Path Marathon/Half Marathon)

The Marathon has been described as the toughest in the UK.

Marathon Man himself Rik Vercoe, the holder of numerous marathon world records and someone who boasts a 39th Place finish in the Marathon des Sables, won the 2013 Ras Dewi Sant and said on completion

“I’ve run a 137 Marathons in 137 weeks and this is the best, the course is stunning”

Runners will meet at the Cross Hotel and then be transferred by bus to the starting point at Mathry, 9 Miles North of St David’s. From there the competitors will run just over a mile to Abercastle where they will join the coast path. And start heading south taking in the splendid fishing village of Porthgain and Abereiddy Bay.

From Abereiddy you will cover some of the toughest terrain the course has to offer. With some of the most breath taking views anywhere in the UK as you make your way to Whitesands Beach.  Amongst the constant undulating elevation that you will face there are two decent climbs – the first on about the 9 mile mark at Penberi (this sneaks up on you!) and the second is on 14 miles and a bit naughty as we take you on a diversion, just so you can experience the Carn Llidi Climb AKA The Whitesands Challenge Hill!  Following this you will re-join the coastpath and head down to the aid station at Whitesands Beach.

From here you will pick up the half marathon route and continue on the Coast Path for a further 9 mile stint along this spectacular part of the National Park until you reach Caerfai Bay, taking in the scenic sights of St Justinian’s, Ramsey Sound (and the Bitches), Porthclais, and St Nons (St David’s Birth place) along the way.

The on the 25.5 mile mark when you start to think that’s that and you’re almost finished you reach ‘The Sting in the Dragons Tail’! The spectacular site of the 12th Centaury Cathedral, it’s 39 steps and the Pebbles Hill, which are all amazing as they lead you UP to the finish line at the Cross Hotel in the heart of the City, just pray it’s not a sprint finish.

On the positive side of things the first half of the marathon is a fair bit tougher than the second!

We will do our best to mark the route and have marshals strategically placed but it is not practical and almost impossible to have every section of the coast path marked with signs. You will see a number of desire lines, animal tracks and footpaths coming off the coast path at various locations – the important thing to remember is this is a coast path run and the following points should help:-

  • Keep the Coast on your Right
  • The Coast Path is marked by the ACORN – Follow the ACORN !
  • Footpaths are marked with a walking figure – DO NOT FOLLOW THESE
  • If we want you to head off the coast path we will sign post or marshal it
  • Please have a look at the route and familiarise yourself!

New for 2018; The Half Marathon will start in the heart of St. David’s at the Cross Hotel.  From here you will run 2.5 miles which takes in the City!and rural roads to Whitesands Beach. This first section will help split the pack before you reach The Coast Path.

At the beach you will join the Coast Path for a 9 mile stint along this spectacular section of the National Park that will take you around to Caerfai Bay. These 9 miles will see you taking in the scenic sights of St Justinian’s, Ramsay Island, Porthclais, and St Nons (St Davids Birth place). During miles 4.5 to 9 you really will be out in the wilds and face the toughest part of the course as you run along the Ramsay Sound, making your way from the Lifeboat Station to the aid station at Porthclais Harbour. It may be hard but this is also one of the most magical places you will visit and it is there to be enjoyed!

Once you arrive in Caerfai there is a slight pull as course starts to take you back inland and then around the country bridleways and roads on the outskirts of the City until you reach mile 12.5 and the last challenge of the day – ‘The Sting in the Dragons Tail’! this is the spectacular 12th Centaury Cathedral, it’s 39 steps, the Pebbles Hill and the finish on the Cross Square. If you get yourself involved in a personal battle with another, a sprint finish will be interesting!!!

Safety Briefing

The Weather

We are all probably aware that the so called “Beast from the East” is heading towards the UK

At this moment in time it does not look like it will affect the running of the event. The weather down here on the most westerly tip of Wales does have a mind of its own and can change in the days and hours leading up to the event so we will be keeping a close eye on it.

Travelling

It is more likely that any extreme weather may have an effect on people traveling to the area rather than the event its self. So we ask you to start thinking about this (if not already considered) also it would appear the worse of the weather is Tuesday to Thursday so with luck roads will be fully operational on Friday.

The Event

We fully expect

  • Cold air temperature
  • A cold easterly breeze
  • Light Showers

Therefore it is important that you prepare for this. The following items are a must in the Kit that you are to carry on your person.

  • Hat & Gloves
  • Space Blanket
  • Mobile Phone
  • Whistle
  • Windproof/waterproof jacket top
  • Full length leggings/tracksuit or similar
  • Water / energy food

You might think that you have run a marathon or similar distance before in shorts and vest and you move quickly and won’t get cold. But you have got to appreciate the environment you are in. Difficulty can occur not only due to a serious injury, but fatigue can happen on 20 miles or you pick up a niggle/slight injury all of which slows you down and in turn cools down the body and suddenly the next 3 miles to the check point become very, very uncomfortable with a easterly wind chill of -3/4.

The Course

Due to the cold dry spell we are having the path has dried up a lot and the thick mud/bog sections of two weeks ago are less. However this leads to another potential hazard of uneven ground (the path is pretty much uneven all the way around) and these frozen sections can have a lot less give. So please be mindful and careful of this when making your way around and considering what footwear to wear.

The major hazards on the course are

  • Sections run extremely close to the cliffs edge (in these areas you should run within yourself and not over take others – you will have plenty of chance to do this in the wider sections)
  • There are a number of downhill sections to bays or harbours some are very short in distance but can be steep and rocky, making them very slippery. We ask and advise you to take an extra few seconds at any downhill point and survey the surface and proceed with caution.
  • Trips and Hazards – As mentioned above there are a number of trips and hazards along the coast path be mindful and tackle each section appropriately

It is not practicable to name or mark each section that we consider to be a hazard and as each part of the path has got the potential to have a hazard for someone. However you will see the obvious dangers of when the path runs close to the cliffs edge or when steep down hills occur and these are the areas that you need to abide by the rule of extra caution and no overtaking.

In the Case of Injury / Withdrawing from the Event

  • Inform a Marshal as soon as practicable and arrangements will be made to have you returned to the Finish point
  • If this occurs at an isolated point and you cannot continue inform another runner who will inform a marshal at the next check point. (Then use your kit immediately to keep warm and take on some food)
  • We will have a tail runner on the event who will get to you if you are at the back of the event or can call for assistance if you slow down and are struggling to progress.
  • Use your mobile phone to call for assistance on the numbers we will provide (Mobile phone signals are very limited on the coast path especially North of St Davids Head. The high ground does tend to have a service or sometimes moving inland a short distance also allows you to pick up reception.

Helping each other

If you do come across someone with a serious injury please assist. We would ask that at least one person continues to the next check point and informs the marshal at the location (if no phone signal can be had). We also ask that someone stays with the casualty till a Marshal/First aid arrives or the Sweeper catches up. In regards to the person waiting with the casualty its good practice for this to be relayed so no one gets too cold waiting. We appreciate that people train along time for this but we are all there to help each other out and in these circumstances we would be mindful of the assistances and respond appropriately.
